Throughout the past couple of years, poker has become increasingly popular on American television (the WSOP and celebrity poker tournaments in particular get plenty of air time) and soon there will be one more show for poker lovers to enjoy.
Starting August, NBC will start airing a show called 'Face The Ace'. It will debut on August 1st at 9 o'clock at night and will be hosted by Steve Schirripa, an actor who is best known for his role as a gangster in The Sopranos.
The concept is pretty simple. The show opens with four doors that conceal four different professional poker players. The contestant then has to choose a door and will battle it out in a game of heads-up no-limit Hold'em Poker against the pro who is seated behind that door. If the contestant wins, he or she can opt to keep the winnings or risk it all by playing against another pro for an even bigger pot.
Should the contestant win against the second pro player as well, the same choice will have to be made. Either keep the winnings and leave, or risk it all for more money against a third professional.
NBC Universal Incorporated's Executive Vice President Jerry Petry is already imagining great things from 'Face the Ace'. "There's nothing like it on the air right now" said Petry. "This will attract the core poker fans who watch it on our network but will also open it up to a new audience of people who like gameshows and aren't necessarily poker fans going in."
NBC has agreed to air seven shows initially and will be helped with the production by leading online poker room Full Tilt Poker. Full Tilt is also hosting a number of qualifying tournaments to select the players needed to fill the number of shows.
