Peter Eastgate - WSOP 2008 Player Profile

In 1989, Phil Hellmuth defeated two-time defending champion Johnny Chan to become the youngest World Series of Poker champion in history at the age of 24. At the time, very little publicity was given to poker, so Hellmuth's achievement went largely unheralded.

However, Hellmuth went on to become possibly the most famous tournament poker player in history. If Denmark's Peter Eastgate, 22, were to win the main event in November, he would have some very big shoes to fill.

Who Is Peter Eastgate?

Peter Eastgate is among the new breed of poker professionals, a player who got his start on the Internet at a young age. While in the past, a player could not get casino poker experience before the age of 21, Eastgate has already been honing his craft for years.

He built his bankroll on low limit cash games until reaching a level in which he could afford to take a shot at some high stakes tournaments. This has worked out for Peter as well, as he made the final table of the Irish Poker Open last year.

Why Peter Eastgate Will Win the World Series of Poker Main Event

Peter Eastgate is not your typical young gun. While his story is a modern one, his tale of working his way up by grinding it out at no limits is a classic poker player's story.

Peter came by his bankroll the hard way, not by getting lucky in a big tournament or too, so he knows about hard work at the poker table. He's not likely to just shove chips around with reckless abandon. Rather expect Peter to look for and exploit great situations at the poker table.

Why Peter Eastgate Will Not Win the World Series of Poker Main Event

Quite simply, no one as young as Peter ever has, nor has anyone from Scandinavia. As talented as Peter is, the pressure of having millions on the line just might get to the youngster. That and being squeezed by the three bigger stacks on one side and the five smaller ones on the other just might prove his downfall.
