A little while ago the Australian government announced its' plans to block certain unwanted websites. These controversial measures were originally aimed at child pornography, yet it appears several other companies will be hit by these censorship practices.
The Great Aussie Firewall
In the beginning of this year we already informed you about these highly criticized government plans. It appeared that the actions would mainly be aimed at blocking child pornography and information helpful for criminals, with gambling sites and political discussions only pointed out as potential additional candidates.
Censorship Spreads
However, with the leaking of a list compiled by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) it became public that a wide range of internet companies will suffer from these measures.
The list that was leaked earlier this week has been publicized on Wikileaks and it appears that no less than 2,395 sites are to be blocked. Among those sites are home pages of several regular companies, certain YouTube videos, dating websites, and medical practitioners.
Poker and Gambling Websites
Most shocking for us gamblers and poker players however, is the fact that some of the most popular casino and poker operators will be placed behind the big Aussie firewall. When the government will continue these medieval plans, websites of amongst others William Hill Casino, Full Tilt, Poker Stars, and Absolute Poker will be inaccessible for Australian citizens.
