Jennifer Harman

It is always fascinating to study the WSOP career of a player who has initially established him- or herself as a cash game player. Oftentimes, discernible differences in how the game is approached and how opponents are dealt with can be seen in players with this type of background (as opposed to those who grew up in a tournament environment or learned the game in a family/academic setting.)

Of all the cash game players who have moved on to make a solid reputation in the tournament world, Jennifer Harman is certainly one of the most interesting. It was in the year 2000 that she won her very first World Series of Poker bracelet in the no-limit deuce to seven low ball event. It truly boggles the mind to consider the fact that she had never played that game before. The only experience she had with no-limit deuce to seven low ball was a very brief tutoring session from Howard "The Professor" Lederer just minutes before the match began. Apparently, Howard truly earned his nickname by virtue of his superlative teaching skills.

Two years later, Jennifer won her second WSOP bracelet in the $5,000 limit Texas Hold'em event. As of the writing of this article, she is the only woman in possession of two bracelets in World Series of Poker open events.

With such a stunning display of poker skills, it is no surprise to learn that Jennifer Harman started playing the game when she was just eight years old. A lifelong resident of Nevada, she attended the University of Nevada, Reno, before deciding to pursue a career as a professional poker player.

But it has not always been an easy ride for Jennifer Harman. She has faced her share of challenges, both at the table and in other aspects of her life. In 2004, she was forced to take a year-long hiatus in order to undergo her second kidney transplant. However, showing the grit of a true champion, she returned to the circuit and finished fourth at the World Poker Tour Five-Diamond World Poker Classic as well as second in the World Series of Poker Circuit Championship event in Las Vegas. Clearly, Jennifer Harmon has the heart of a winner and the guts to keep on dealing with whatever life throws her way. That she is widely considered to be the best female poker player in entire world is only one of many things of which Jennifer Harman deserves to feel very proud.
