Randy Lew (better known as his online poker nickname "nanonoko") set a new world record over the weekend for the most hand of online poker played in 8 hours while still turning a profit.
Playing at online poker site PokerStars, Lew played an amazing 23,493 hands during the eight hours, with as many as 40 tables open and running at one time. While many players are capable of playing that many tables and hands, few are able to do so profitably, which would be the real test for Lew during his world-record attempt.
At one point during his attempt he dipped as low as a $1,200 loss, with the prospects looking bleak as far as being able to finish with a profit. Lew battled back, however, and in the end managed to eke out the smallest of profits, finishing +$7.65.
Lew attempted the record at PokerStar's annual PCA poker festival in the Bahamas, one of the most popular events on the live poker tournament circuit due to the location and some of the massive prizepools to be won in some of the events.
He didn't take a single break during the eight hour challenge, focusing solely on the two monitors in front of him filled with poker tables. The 23,493 hands played worked out to to about 50 hands played every minute, or one hand played every 1.2 seconds.
If he'd been playing live poker at an average speed of 30 hands/hour, he'd have had to play for over a month with no breaks to play the same number of hands he played in 8 hours online for the world-record.
Lew originally made his name in the poker world by playing 20+ tables of poker simultaneously at mid/high stakes and consistently winning, something very difficult to achieve in the world of online poker.
In the last year he has focused more time on playing live tournaments, finding equal success there with deep runs at tournament such as the Aussie Millions and winning his first major live event in late 2011 at APPT Macau.
