Every casino game has its own lingo. Study this glossary to understand what's said at the roulette table. You'll find the names for different bets and other important roulette words.

American Roulette Wheel

An American roulette wheel has 38 slots, 1 through 36 plus 0 and 00. The house edge is 5.4%.

Column Bet
A wager on 12 numbers in a column - pays 2:1


Corner Bet
A bet on four numbers in a square - pays 8:1


Dozen Bet
A bet on 12 numbers, which are divided into three groups - pays 8:1


European Roulette Wheel
A European roulette wheel has 37 slots, 1 through 36 plus 0. The house edge is 2.7%.


Even Bet
A wager that the nest number is even - pays 1:1


Five-Number Bet
This bet can only be made on American roulette wheels and is a combination of 0, 00 1, 2 and 3 - pays 6:1


French Roulette Wheel

High Bet
A wager that the nest number is high (19-36) - pays 1:1

 

House Edge/Advantage
The mathematical advantage the casino has on every bet


Inside Bet
A bet on the number section of the layout


Layout
The table top where players place their wagers


Line Bet
A wager that the ball will land on one of six numbers in a line (two rows) - pays 5:1


Low Bet
A wager that the nest number is low (1-18) - pays 1:1


Martingale System

A famous betting system : Players are supposed to double their wagers after every lost bet and thereby win the original wager as soon as a bet is won.


Odd Bet
A wager that the nest number is odd - pays 1:1


Outside Bet
Any wager that is not a bet on the number section - pays 1:1 or 2:1


Quarter bet
See Corner Bet


Red or Black Bet
A wager that the nest number is black or red - pays 1:1


Split Bet
A wager that the ball lands on one of two chosen numbers - 17:1


Straight Up Bet
A wager on any single number on the layout - pays 35:1


Street Bet
A bet on three numbers, also known as a trio bet - pays: 11:1


Zero
The green number that creates the house edge. American roulette wheels also has a double zero 00.
