Few probably realized then that they might have been witnessing the emergence of the next world poker champion.
Who Is Scott Montgomery?
Scott Montgomery is one of two Canadians at the final table, following in the footsteps of such Canadian masters of the felt as Daniel Negreanu and Gavin Smith. Like Negreanu and Smith, Montgomery is starting his career as a "young gun," amassing an impressive poker resume at the tender age of 26.
Montgomery's claim to fame before this was his L.A. Poker Classic WPT appearance. However, he has had several impressive results this year, including a 16th place finish in the WSOP $10,000 heads up event and a final table appearance at the $3,000 no limit hold'em event of the Bellagio Cup in Las Vegas.
Why Scott Montgomery Will Win the World Series of Poker Main Event
Scott Montgomery has the momentum of a runaway freight train going into this year's main event. He opened the year with a stellar performance at the WPT L.A. Poker Classic at Commerce Casino.
He then took the World Series of Poker by force, cashing three separate times not including the main event. Finally, not content to wait around for the final table to convene, Scott went out and finished 4th in the Bellagio Cup $3,000 no limit hold'em event and 9th in the Legends of Poker $1,000 no limit hold'em event.
Why Scott Montgomery Will Not Win the World Series of Poker Main Event
It really seems that the only thing to derail this young Canadian star is bad luck. While Montgomery is sitting third in chips, his middle of the pack status will make him a target from both sides.
The two chip leaders, with about five and seven million more in chips, may try to bully him, figuring he will not want to risk an early exit. The shorter stacks will be looking at him as an opportunity to double up. This could work out great for Montgomery if he gets the cards, but will be extremely frustrating if he does not.
