The Deal, a new poker movie, is due for release on April 25. "The best poker film since rounders", says WSOP Main Event champion Joe Hachem. But when watching the trailer, it seems more like the actors are just piling poker clichés.
I'm not sure this is a great film. Actually, I strongly doubt it. Ok, I'm not going to write a bad review about a film I haven't seen yet. Instead, let's look what ingredients we've got in this movie.
First of all, there's a number of famous poker players portraying themselves: Phil Laak, Antonio Esfandiari, Joe Hachem, Chris Moneymaker and Greg Raymer all appear around the poker tables.
Then we have the young poker talent, played by Bret Harrison, who has a great feel for the game but needs some guidance. By whom you might ask. Burt Reynolds naturally.
Reynolds is playing the retired poker legend Tommy Vinson. And the team - Harrison, Reynolds - starts by cleaning the tables. They're just unbeatable (this is just a qualified guess from my part.) However, the team runs into problems - including a Las Vegas call girl - and the two players decide to part ways.
As in all films of this sort, The Deal ends with a great final battle. The former friends clash at a World Poker Tour event, hosted by Sexton and Patten of course. I guess they end up heads-up for the title, and I put my money on Harrison. But who knows. Maybe Moneymaker has qualified through a satellite and wins it all.
