Limit Hold 'em?

Limit Hold 'em?

With all of the hoopla surrounding no-limit Texas Hold 'Em, its younger brother, limit Hold 'Em seems to be forgotten in the shadows. But this is still a fun and rewarding game to play, and has far less competition than its more glamorous counterpart. In fact, some people are not even aware that such a game exists!

The basic rules of limit games are the same as the no-limit. Each player still gets dealt two cards and the flop, turn and river are all dealt in order. You still make the best five-card hand that you can. The hierarchy of hands still applies to this game as in any Poker game.

There are two types of limit games: spread limit and pot limit. Spread limit means there is a pre-determined range of bets you can use in play. For instance, if a spread limit game has posted limits of $10-$40, this means that the minimum bet is ten dollars while you can not bet more than forty at one time. There are longhand games which mean 8 or more players, and there are shorthand games which mean less than 8 players. Your strategy will vary according to whether the games are long or shorthand.

The other type of limit game would be pot limit. This means that your max bet can not exceed the size of the pot. The minimum bet would still be the size of the large blind, just as in no-limit games.

Limit games are good for beginner players to get their feet wet in Texas Hold 'Em without as much risk- its impossible to bust out in the first hand, like in no-limit. People who have impulse control or sometimes bet recklessly after a bad beat may also find that limit games are good for them. Because it takes longer to potentially lose your stack, you play more hands in limit games and therefore learn the games better.
